To our Novel Hand community,
You might notice a few changes to our website today.
Each of these changes reflect a calibration of our goals and what Novel Hand is about. Allow me to explain.
When describing Novel Hand’s goals, I continually came back to the centrality of activism and impact to our mission. Novel Hand was created because of a disconnect that I noticed in our generation: while we’re passionate about current humanitarian issues, it can be difficult to find ways to actually make a difference. Ultimately, I believe that the solution to this disconnect requires translating our activism into impact.
So… activism, meet impact.
*****
By exploring the best solutions to global humanitarian issues, Novel Hand is channeling our passion and activism into sustainable impact.
But what does that mean?
ACTIVISM
According to Merriam-Webster, activism is “a doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue.”
Activism is acting on one’s beliefs. It’s standing up for the oppressed and advocating for the marginalized.
Activism is passion.
IMPACT
According to Merriam-Webster, impact is “the force of impression of one thing on another : a significant or major effect.”
Impact is lasting; it has a major effect.
Impact doesn’t change with the news cycle or the month. It has force and longevity.
MEET
To meet is to “to come into the presence of” and “to conform to especially with exactitude and precision.”
To meet someone is to be in their presence and to become acquainted with them. When you meet someone, you begin to know them and to understand them.
Without impact, our activism is fleeting and unhelpful.
With impact, our activism creates positive, sustainable change.
Our activism must meet and become impact.
