Last week, I shared on my personal Instagram story that I walk past Moxy Hotel Austin on my commute each day. A sign on the building reads, “YOU TALKED A BIG GAME IN HER DMS, MAKE YOUR BROTHERS PROUD.”
I’ve walked past this for nearly a month now- and it always irks me. When I posted about it on my Instagram story, I was surprised and empowered by the response I received from friends and mere acquaintances who also found the sign to be demeaning to women and just plain gross.
That same day (Friday, Sept. 17), I submitted a complaint to Marriott Bonvoy, the parent company of Moxy Hotels, and tweeted about the sign. A Twitter bot asked for my name and email to follow up with me.

The next evening, I received an email from the general manager of Moxy Austin. She asked to speak with me directly about my concerns.
I called the general manager on Sunday, Sept. 19 and explained that the sign objectifies women. I explained that the sign is particularly problematic given the issues of sexual assault and rape on college campuses, and particularly at the University of Texas at Austin.
The general manager was friendly and appreciative of my time and effort in explaining the issues with the sign to her. She informed me that the signs are changes quarterly, but did not know when the signs will be changed next. She said that she would take my concerns into consideration for future marketing.
I am appreciative of the manager’s time in talking with me, but I am not satisfied with the outcome of our conversation.
I ask Moxy Hotel Austin to immediately remove this sign from their building.
