Five things to do at home this week

  • by Alexa

Hey everyone- a lot has changed since our first “Five Things” post last Tuesday. As more states issue stay at home orders, the coronavirus has begun to feel more real. We’re back this week with five more ways to use your time at home to continue helping others and learning about humanitarian issues.

Check out 80,000 Hours’ COVID-19 resources

Eighty-thousand Hours compiled a lot of resources to learn about COVID-19 and how you can help. They also have resources about careers in biosecurity, if you’re looking to stop the next global pandemic. I haven’t looked at all of it, but it’s a wealth of information if you’re looking to kill some time.

Watch 13th on Netflix

This documentary analyzes the history of African Americans since Reconstruction and the boom of the for-profit prison industry. I recently watched it for my constitutional law class, and I was reminded of several of the things I learned from Just Mercy. Thirteenth isn’t easy to watch, but it’s important to understand the prison industry in our nation.

Listen to The New Activist podcast

This is one of my all time favorite podcasts. Produced by International Justice Mission, The New Activist explores solutions to global humanitarian issues (just like Novel Hand!). I recommend starting with this episode with Liz Dong of Evangelical Immigration Table.

Learn about food insecurity in the United States

Food insecurity, access to enough food to lead a healthy, active lifestyle, is a problem in America. This problem is exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic as many children don’t have access to school lunches and as unemployment rises. Learn about food insecurity here and here, then visit Feeding America to find out how you can be a part of the solution.

Find new ways to help

Yesterday Novel Hand posted a guide to ways that you can help those most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in six areas: health, food insecurity, service and retail industry, the criminal justice system, the elderly, and nonprofits. Read through our suggestions, and then find another way to help and share it with us at novelhandco@gmail.com.
