Sunday, March 8 is International Women’s Day. Started in 1911, IWD celebrates the achievements of women and focuses on unity and advocacy. This year’s theme is #EachforEqual – advocating for gender equality in our communities and our world.
As a staff that is currently 100% female, we’re excited about celebrating International Women’s Day. Below are five ways that you can celebrate with us and others around the world.
Support women-owned businesses
Support women this International Women’s Day by shopping at women-owned businesses. You can find a directory of women-owned US businesses here.
Watch Girl Rising
Last semester I watched Girl Rising, a movie about girls’ education across the world. As a senior in college, I’ve found it easy to take the value of education for granted. Girl Rising helped me to appreciate what a privilege it is to attend college. I was reminded of the barriers to girls’ education and human rights around the world. Get a group of friends together and watch this inspiring documentary.
Commit to mentor other women
Some of my most meaningful relationships in college are mentorship relationships with older and younger women. Often, the best advice comes from someone who is just one step ahead of you. Celebrate International Women’s Day by committing to mentor another woman at your church, at work, or in another part of your life. Mentorship is crucial in our professional and personal lives. By committing to walk alongside and support a younger woman over a period of time, you can impact her in ways you might not ever know.
Donate to or volunteer at your local women’s center
Interning at an advocacy center for victims of sexual violence and sexual assault was one of my most meaningful experiences of college. While it was difficult work, I learned a lot from the women that I worked with and the women and families that I served. Getting involved with a women’s center or advocacy service is a great way to support women in your community.
