January in Review: We’re so excited!

Since launching on Jan. 1, Novel Hand has been growing rapidly. Today, I’m sharing my reflections on our first month and what we’re looking forward to in February.

January was so fun. From finally launching on New Year’s Day and sharing this project with our friends and family, to doubling the size of our team (welcome Grace and another new team member that we’ll be introducing next week!), it’s been a month full of joy and excitement.

It’s also been a month of conversations and learning. From coordinating social media posts to meeting with mentors and professors, we’ve dug in and begun the hard work of learning and asking questions. We’re so thankful for the resources, opportunities and people that have been a part of starting Novel Hand. 

I’ve really enjoyed diving into criminal justice and mass incarceration topics this month. I’m excited to continue learning about the relationship between the rule of law and poverty. As I think about working for International Justice Mission next year and attending law school one day, I’m excited to learn more about justice through Novel Hand.

Entering February, I’m also excited to explore new topics. In this next month, I plan to learn more about digital financial inclusion. After taking a class last semester about financial technology, I’m really interested in how access to banking services and credit can increase equality. This article is a great introduction to digital financial inclusion. It explains a policy that New York City is considering to expand banking services through an electronic payment platform similar to Venmo. We’ll also be learning about environmental issues and social enterprise in February.
