June in Review: This is a Movement

Novel Hand

This past month has been revolutionary for the United States as we come to terms with the racism that continues to pervade our institutions, our communities, and our actions.

I’ve been encouraged by our generation’s participation in this movement. Novel Hand is founded on the belief that our generation is deeply passionate about social and humanitarian issues, and our engagement in the Black Lives Matter and anti-racism movements demonstrates that we are truly committed to creating change. However, I’ve also noticed that many of us aren’t sure how to help or what we can do to to best support marginalized communities. How do we engage in genuine allyship rather than performative activism?

All month, our team has been exploring and writing about ways to authentically engage in and be a part of this movement. Annabelle wrote about the death of George Floyd as a call to action for our generation. Kelly wrote about the purpose of bail funds, and Pragya wrote about how the model minority myth perpetuates anti-black racism. Emma F wrote about the doctrine of qualified immunity and how it protects police officers from civil lawsuits. Grace L wrote about how to donate responsibly and effectively. I wrote about the history of racially restrictive covenants in Minnesota and other metropolitan areas– read a summary of that post below.

In July, our team is excited to continue exploring anti-racism while also learning about the environment, justice, and so many other topics. This isn’t a moment; this is a movement.

We have two announcements coming in July. I’m so excited to share a new way to learn with us. Sign up for early access below!
