Hey everyone! March looked really different than I thought it would. We’re all experiencing changes- whether moving home from college, beginning to work from home, or something else. As COVID-19 changes our daily schedules and how we interact with one another, it can be difficult to adjust. It’s even harder to find ways to make an impact in the world. I’ve found that this is a really good time to read and learn. Even while we can’t go out in the community and serve, there are still ways to interact with humanitarian issues.
Like I said, March looked really different than I thought it would, and that applies to Novel Hand as well. When I wrote our first viewpoints post about COVID-19 on March 3, I had no idea that I would be told to leave campus just a week later because of the virus’s spread. While the transition home required a break from our regular content, March also brought growth to Novel Hand. We welcomed two new contributors, Emma and Erika. I’m so excited to have them on our team! Emma is so passionate and thoughtful, and her work serving people experiencing incarceration has already been so enriching for me to learn about. If you haven’t caught on yet, Erika is my younger sister. So I’m pretty excited to have her on our team as well 😉
Below are our must-reads of March:
- Emma S wrote about how COVID-19 affects people experiencing incarceration, and what you can do to help.
- We’re finding all the ways that you can help during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Grace wrote about gentrification in Nashville and its role in the aftermath of the Middle Tennessee tornadoes.
If you’re like me and you’re finding yourself with extra time on your hands, consider joining our team in some capacity. We’re excited to continue growing and learning. We want to invite more people into what we’re doing, whether as contributors or graphic designers or in another capacity. Additionally, we plan to hire interns this summer–look for applications to come out next week!
Going into a new month, I’m really excited about where Novel Hand is headed. We’re planning new content for April and the rest of the spring, while continuing to learn about the topics that we’re already invested in. As COVID-19 continues, Novel Hand will cover the humanitarian side of the pandemic while also exploring other topics.
Thanks for reading and for being a part of our community!
