Novel Hand Intern summer 2022 internship

One of my favorite parts of starting Novel Hand has been welcoming three classes of interns to Novel Hand. Now, we’re hiring interns for summer 2021!

Beyond training and application of skills in one of three specific areas, the Novel Hand internship program provides opportunities for networking and professional development. The time commitment is 10-15 hours per week, and will begin in May and conclude in August. Deadlines and assignments are flexible based on the intern’s academic and personal schedules.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with a priority deadline of March 15, but you are encouraged to submit your application as soon as possible. Applications will remain open until April 20.

Writing & Research

Writing and Research Interns write weekly articles for The Journal in a humanitarian topic area of interest. Our interns also collaborate with contributors and other team members to research humanitarian topics.

Our past Writing & Research Interns enjoyed:

  • Having the freedom to write about humanitarian and social issues that interest them
  • Collaborating with other interns and Novel Hand team members
  • Flexibility to write about topics that they cared about
  • Joining a community of passionate, like-minded writers and activists

Here’s what our past interns said about their internship experiences:

“I love that my internship with Novel Hand allows and encourages me to explore a huge range of humanitarian issues. Over the past months, I’ve researched and written about conservation, racial justice, climate change, artificial intelligence, and more, and I feel so lucky to be able to connect with other individuals who are passionate about the intersection of activism and impact.”

Regan, Columbia University

“Interning at Novel Hand has taught me how to sharpen and tighten my writing. It has also given me the space to learn about topics that I am passionate about. I am leaving this semester of interning with knowledge of statistics, laws, history, and personal stories that I will carry with me in my future work. On top of that, Novel Hand is such an inspiring community to be a part of– everyone on the team is incredible!”

Victoria Berry, Belmont University

“This internship has given me the opportunity to explore and write about topics I am passionate about. It has also allowed me to refine my writing skills and practice writing for a general audience. I have learned so much from my fellow interns, and it has been a great way to stay up to date on humanitarian issues.”

Izzy Norman, UNC-Chapel Hill

“I’ve really enjoyed writing for Novel Hand because of the community of learning I’ve found. Every article that other writers post is so well-researched and thought out, and it’s been an incredible experience to learn from and with such a passionate group of women. I’ve definitely learned a lot from researching my own articles, but the community created by Novel Hand through our meetings, social media, and the website has taught me so much valuable information about activism and action.”

Eve, University of Virginia
